Hollier named "Father of the Year"
You could
feel something special when you read the title of the letter that 11
year old Tyler Herald wrote about his dad Ricky Hollier. It was a
simple and short title, “My Dad”, but you knew that this was going
to be a touching tribute to the one lucky father who would be chosen
the 2008 Groves Chamber of Commerce & Tourist Center “Father of the
Year.” You see, Mr. Hollier is Tyler’s Step-Dad and has been in his
life since he was 2 years old, being the only dad Tyler has ever
known.
From potty training Tyler, to acting as his personal baseball coach,
Tyler has been very aware of the special relationship he has had
with Mr. Hollier. He brags about his dad “always getting me stuff”,
large or small. He reflects back to when he was 7 years old and his
dad took the family to San Padre Island and helped Tyler catch a
Stingray and a Hammerhead Shark.
You can tell when you read his letter that Mr. Hollier has made
Tyler feel special and included, like when the two of them “built a
barbecue pit with all kind of cool welding stuff.” Tyler was also
proud of them working together to build a ramp and a tree house.
What touched me the most about Tyler was the way he ended his
letter:
“Whether my dad wins or not, he’s father of the year with me every
year, because he’s being a father he doesn’t have to be.”
